Our ward's Fathers and Sons/Turkey Shoot outing was this weekend. They were having a dutch oven cookoff for dinner on the first night. Kevin decided he wanted to participate, which made me a little nervous because he has never cooked in a dutch oven before. I worried and worried about it, beacuse that's what I do best. My thought was, he is either going to be so frustrated (because I wasn't going to be there to tell him what to do (me thinking he NEEDS me all the time)) with the result that he would never do it again, or he would be so proud of himself and I would have to come to the reality that he doesn't need me to tell him what to do all the time. In preparation for the cookoff Kevin did some research on the internet and talked to a couple people. He came up with a chicken recipe off the internet and his sister Katie and her husband Marc gave him a good idea for a pear and raspberry cobbler for desert. Kevin went out and bought a new dutch oven. We seasoned it (that's a whole other story in it's self). And Marc and Katie let him borrow a dutch oven, they also lent him some tongs, cookbooks, a chimney, and a tool to lift the lids. Kevin was so excited, and I was still so worried. He called me Friday night after dinner and told me it went great, to my relief and dismay. He said everyone at the campout thought he was a pro at dutch oven cooking because he had all the tools. Of course he was not going to tell them it was his first time... Saturday morning when he came home I was helping him unload the truck, lo and behold- there was a brand new dutch oven still in the box... He had won the cookoff! I then realized again that he is such a great man and I don't need to tell him what to do all the time, a triumph for both of us.

Way to go Kevin! Come over anytime-we'd love to sample your fine work! I must say, however, that if Jennifer were there you'd probably have a nice picture of your triumph! Wifes are goo for some things ;)
Don't you love it how reality will sometimes reach up ans smack you in the face sometimes. Congrats Kevin. If you could pass along the recipes, especially the cobbler, that would be great.

Yeah, Jennifer let Kevin out of the house without holding her hand (I feel for you bro' I lived with it for years). No seriously, though, that cobbler sounds good.
